Visionary Thinking and Your ADHD Entrepreneur Journey

Let's discuss a significant topic for ADHD Entrepreneurs—embracing visionary thinking while balancing our unique brain dynamics. Our brains are wired differently, and understanding how to leverage this difference will make all the difference.

Understanding Visionary Thinking
As ADHD Entrepreneurs, we're natural visionaries. We see the future with clarity, imagining where we want to go and crafting elaborate plans. At times it feels like we have lived this future. But here's the thing, executing those plans is a different story altogether. Our brains buzz with ideas, yet often lack the patience for slow, methodical steps needed to bring those visions to life. WOW that sentence was painful to write – and read I bet!! But true.
Nicole Pitcher and I had a great chat about this. Visionaries are future-focused. To execute these painfully slow and methodical steps, we need strategic partners who can help make our vision a reality and convert it into actionable steps. Without this, we tend to do everything ourselves—either because we feel others are too slow or because we've always done it that way.
The Frustration of Delegation
One of the biggest frustrations for ADHD Entrepreneurs is the gap between our speed of thought and execution and that of our team. We often end up thinking, "Why can’t they keep up?" It's essential to recognize that this frustration is ours, not theirs. Your team’s difference of pace and methodical approach are not flaws; they are the means to bring your vision to fruition.
Nicole mentioned something enlightening: our frustrations need a pause. We need to take a breath. Poor delegation often isn’t because the team lacks skill but because we haven’t communicated effectively and clearly. We assume they understand our rapid-fire ideas when they need clear directions and priorities. Why can’t they understand our “drive-by” delegations?
Practical Steps for Effective Delegation
Here’s a practice that can help break down your big vision into smaller, actionable milestones. Think of your journey like climbing a mountain, with several mini peaks along the way. These smaller milestones provide the team with visible, achievable steps, reducing their need for constant clarification.
Also, we must remember to actively involve them in the planning stages. When you provide a clear path and allow room for their input, the team feels more aligned with the vision and can work more efficiently. Value their methodical approach; it complements our visionary style.
Balancing Vision with Execution
Being a visionary can sometimes mean overlooking the details. We see the forest and miss out on the trees. That’s why having a strategic partner or team to manage the execution is invaluable. They navigate the journey, ensuring every step aligns with your big picture, while you keep your eyes on the prize.
For those who struggle with the "how" while excelling in the "what" and "why," this partnership is important. Clear and regular communication ensures everyone knows their role, reducing friction and maximizing efficiency.
Embrace the Team
As ADHD Entrepreneurs, it’s tempting to speed ahead, leaving the team to catch up. But remember, they bring structure and stability to our fast-paced ideas (brains J). They are the ones who take our 40,000-foot vision and bring it down to earth. Appreciate their efforts and recognize that their need for direction isn't a hindrance; it’s what makes achieving our vision possible.
Our adaptability as visionaries means we can pivot and shift easily. However, for sustainable growth, our team needs a clear, consistent path. They are our boots on the ground, moving us steadily towards our goals.
